Commerce City battles pesky mosquitoes

(KOA, 2011) 850 KOA's Jerry Bell shadowed Aaron Rosenblum from Colorado Mosquito Control Inc. as he examined ponds and areas of stagnant water in the Reunion area of Commerce City.

While many cities and counties have cut budgets for mosquito abatement, Commerce City stays at it. The Reunion area has many homes very close to ponds that are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Last year in Colorado, 81 people were infected by the West Nile virus carried by some mosquitoes. 4 people died.

Statewide there's concern that areas flooded by snow melt runoff will become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other insects. The risk will grow when the waters start to recede. Listen to the full report...
