COMMERCE CITY – Commerce City has joined other surrounding communities for the eighth year in a row for an annual trapping and monitoring program to control the mosquito population. Colorado Mosquito Control set traps at various locations in the city and will check them periodically throughout the summer to determine the number and species of insects. Based on their findings, the organization develops an appropriate treatment program to address the mosquito population. A more aggressive treatment program is being implemented at Buffalo Run Golf Course to address insects that gather near the course’s water features.
“Colorado’s mosquito season starts in the spring and ends in mid-September, so having a coordinated effort with other municipalities can help prevent transmission of the West Nile Virus,” said City Manager Jerry Flannery. “Residents can really help our efforts by calling the hotline to report concerns.”
Residents can do their part in controlling the mosquito population by removing, draining, or cleaning standing water that might collect in wading pools, tires, boats, clogged gutters or bird baths – areas ripe for breeding. Anyone with a treatment request or concern regarding mosquitoes is encouraged to call Colorado Mosquito Control at 303-558-8730.
