Gov. Bill Ritter announced today he has appointed Dr. Lisa A. Miller as the state’s acting chief medical officer effective Sept. 20, replacing Ned Calonge, who recently was named the new president and CEO of The Colorado Trust.
Miller has worked in the public health field for almost 20 years. She currently is director of the Disease Control and Environmental Epidemiology Division in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, a position she has held since 2003.
Miller has served in various roles within the department since 1993, including acting chief medical officer and acting state epidemiologist from August 2001 to January 2002. The chief medical officer oversees the state’s disease control and prevention, epidemiology, and emergency medical and preparedness services, and also provides advice and counsel to the Governor and executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
“Lisa is extremely smart, gifted and passionate about public health and public health issues,” Gov. Ritter said. “We have benefited greatly from her years of service and I am pleased she has agreed to serve in this new capacity and carry on the great work that is underway in the Department of Public Health and Environment.”
Miller earned her bachelor’s degree and doctor of medicine from the University of Minnesota. She completed her internal medicine internship and general preventive medicine residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where she also earned a master’s of science in public health.
“Having worked closely with Dr. Calonge during his tenure here, I know how much he has contributed to important public health issues in our state,” Miller said. “I look forward to continuing that work until a permanent chief medical officer is selected.”
