May is Asthma Awareness month – 1 in 4 Coloradan children, or 113,633 kids, have asthma

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency is hosting an Asthma Awareness and Green and Healthy Schools Workshop and Information Fair on Monday, May 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
According to the CDC, nearly 5,000 hospitalizations occurred due to asthma in Colorado in 2009. Nationally, there was an increase of almost 50% in asthma diagnoses over the last decade.

WHAT:

EPA’s event will feature experts from one of the nation’s top respiratory hospitals, National Jewish Health.

Dr. Stanley J. Szefler, and Dr. Lisa Cicutto will address environmental determinants of airway disease in children and how schools can help manage asthma on May 9th at the Asthma Awareness and Healthy Schools Workshop.

Additional presentations, workshops, informational booths, exhibits, and video screenings from leading public health and environmental experts will focus on critical topics such as current airway disease research, asthma management in schools, Integrated Pest Management - a safer and usually less costly option for effective pest management, minimizing exposure to PCBs in schools, and how to clean out outdated and unknown chemicals found in schools.

Interview opportunities with environmental and health experts will be provided.

WHO:

EPA, the Rocky Mountain Region Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, National Jewish Health, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Attendees include school district personnel, facility managers, school administrators, school nurses, state and local personnel, nonprofit organizations, PTAs/PTOs, parents, teachers, school children, and others interested in creating green and healthy school environments.
