· Teach children to wash their hands often with soap and water. They need to wash for at least 20 seconds – that’s about how long it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song through twice.
· Sharing is important, except when it comes to personal items! Teach children not to share drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
· Be sure everyone in the family covers their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Teach kids that if they are caught without a tissue, to cough or sneeze into their sleeve and not their hands.
· Know the signs and symptoms of the flu: fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
·Don’t send children to school if they are sick. Keep sick children home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever.
Health officials recommend the flu vaccine for everyone over 6 months of age. Flu vaccine is still available at local clinics and pharmacies.
