Partner in the fight against cancer by running stadium stairs for charity

Dozens of Colorado non-profit cancer organizations are collaborating for one mission: to partner in the fight against cancer. Step Up for Cancer is a multi-generational stair-climbing event open to families and individuals of all ages. In its third year, participants will have the opportunity to earn pledges for their cancer charity of choice on Sunday, August 7 by climbing all 1,765 stairs at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park or just a portion of the 33 rows of stairs.

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR NEW CHILD-ONLY HEALTH POLICIES BEGINS AUGUST 1

An open-enrollment period for new child-only health policies begins on August 1. These policies will be offered by all health insurance carriers offering individual coverage. The General Assembly mandated during the 2011 legislative session that all insurance carriers writing individual coverage in Colorado also must offer child-only policies. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law on April 29.

Changes to Community Health Services Clinic at Kearney Middle School

Due to a loss of grant funding, the Community Health Services (CHS) at Kearney Middle School clinic will be closed to the general public as of August 5, 2011.

On Monday, Commerce City Council will discuss and possibly take action on a Adams County referral for a Medical Waste Treatment Facility. Adams County is currently reviewing an application for a Certificate of Designation (CD) for a Medical Waste Treatment Facility. The facility would be located at 8620 Brighton Road, which Commerce City does not currently have the contiguity to annex.

New study confirms that primary health care saves money

A new study by researchers at the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing demonstrates that Medicaid clients who are seen at community health centers use hospital services thirty percent less than those seen in private practices. The study was published today in the July 2011 edition of the national health policy journal, Health Affairs.

Tri-County Health Department has given their ninth annual “Public Health Hero Award” to eight local recipients. The "Flat 14er Initiative" is an obesity fighting program partnering Tri-County Health Department with school districts and parks and recreation agencies in Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. According to "Health Policy Solutions," Colorado's childhood obesity rate is increasing faster than in every other state except for one, the State of Nevada. Childhood obesity in Colorado increased 23 percent between 2003 and 2007.

Bike to Work Day a Success in Adams County

The Adams County Board of Commissioners applauds Bike to Work Day participants for an amazing turnout on June 22, 2011. Approximately 350 bicyclists passed through Adams County's breakfast station from 6:30 - 9 a.m. at the confluence of the Clear Creek and South Platte River trails.
